The Minutemen are playing well offensively -- particularly at the foul line (10-of-11) and beyond the 3-point line, where they have hit almost half (7) of their 15 attempts.

Etienne Brower leads UMass with 12 points, while Ricky Harris has nine off the bench.

Brower can't miss

UMass leads, 13-5, just over four minutes into the contest.

Etienne Brower is on fire the last five or so games. He is 2-of-2 from the perimeter already and Gary Forbes is 1-of-1.

Saint Louis vs. UMass is about to begin at the Mullins Center...

The student section is baren. The turnout otherwise, is solid. Just no students.

One real interesting item of note. Ricky Harris has been benched. Matt Glass will start in his place.

The UMass football team has its own section near the UMass bench. Their contingent is almost as big as the entire student section.

Minutemen hang on

Hockey
Jeremy Rice

UMass 3, Northeastern 1

Northeastern closed the gap to a two-goal lead, then the teams exchanged penalty shots, but the Minutemen held on for the 3-1 victory that was much-needed for the Mass Attack to stay in the playoff picture.

Goaltender Paul Dainton was sensational on the third period save for the one goal, keeping a second out of the net by sweeping it off the goal line at the last moment.

The Minutemen head to Maine next weekend for a two-game set in Orono.

P.J. Fenton extended UMass's lead to 3-0 with a power-play goal midway through the second period. Freshman James Marcou started the play with some nifty puckhandling at the blue line to gain the zone.

Paul Dainton stymied the Huskies in the second period. NU pressured UMass throughout, but Dainton kept everything in front of him and controlled rebounds, preventing any second-, third- chance scoring opportunities.

The Minutemen are 10-2-2 in 2007-08 when scoring at least three goals in a game.

Final

Men's basketball

Fordham 76, UMass 72

NCAA Tournament hopes in some serious trouble after this one. Free throws did them in again.

Halftime at the Mullins Center

UMass 34, Fordham 32

Etienne Brower hit a 3-pointer as time expired to help UMass re-gain the lead over the Rams entering halftime.

He led all scorers with 14 points, while Gary Forbes had 12 points and nine rebounds. Marcus Stout leads Fordham with nine points.

Ricky Harris continues to struggle for the Minutemen, missing all five shots, not including a 1-and-1 free throw attempt late in the half.

Foul troubles continue to plague the Minutemen. Dante Milligan and Tony gaffney each have three, while Brower and Luke Bonner have two apiece.

The Rams have outscored UMass by seven points at the foul line. Both teams have struggled from the field and with turnovers. UMass has no points from its bench in 22 minutes of play.

UMass 11, Fordham 6 (15:06 left in 1st half)

The crowd size is average, but the students that are here are loud. Pretty good atmosphere.

Where is everybody?

Tonight's 9 p.m. tip-off at the Mullins Center for UMass/Fordham is just minutes away.

And there is nobody here.

Attendance hasn't been all that great this season, but I thought people would show up in droves tonight. The game will air on ESPN2 -- don't ask me why they decided to show this game -- and all I heard on campus today was people talking about going to the game.

I guess it was just talk. Because no one is actually here.

I'll keep you updated on the attendance...maybe people will start filing in.

Minutemen tie it up

The Minutemen evened the score at one 2:47 into the second period on a goal by freshman Mike Lecomte. The center took a pass from Will Ortiz at the boards, carried it into the slot.

His first show was blocked, but his second effort beat BC goaltender John Muse over the right shoulder.

The Minutemen struggled on the power play and are o-for-3 with the man advantage, but have stifled the powerful BC attack with strong defensive play.

The line of center Brett Watson and forwards Marc Concannon and Chris Davis have been all over BC's scoring line of Nathan Gerbe, Brian Gibbons and Ben Smith, who have had the puck in the UMass zone much of the game, but have gotten very few clear shots at the net.

BC leads in shots on net, 20-16.

Boston College forward Brian Gibbons gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the first period.

BC's leading scorer, Nathan Gerbe, set the play up with some quick stickhandling down the left side of the UMass zone.

The Minutemen had their chances in the first half with two power plays and a 4-on-4 but failed to beat BC's John Muse. The Eagles outshot UMass, 11-9, in the opening period.
