Tipoff nears at MSG for NIT finals

Men's Basketball
Michael King

NEW YORK - There's already a large contingent of UMass fans in Madison Square Garden for tonight's National Invitational Tournament final this evening. The game will be televised on ESPN. Though UMass is not playing for a national championships (true cynics would say that both teams are playing for 66th place), it is the school's first chance for a post-season championship.

The key matchups tonight will be between Kosta Koufos-Luke Bonner and Jamar Butler-Chris Lowe. Bonner and Koufos have a similar style of play, though the 7-foot Ohio State center has a much more refined offensive game. Both Butler and Lowe are the leaders of their respective basketball teams and much of their productivity is not reflected on the stat sheet.

Tonight's game also marks the second time that UMass and Ohio State have met in the final four of a major college sports tournament. Ohio State defeated the Minutemen in men's soccer back in December of the semifinals of the 2007 College Cup.
