Beat down x 2

Baseball

UMass gave up 22 hits, seven walks and committed three errors on Friday against Charlotte. It lost the game, 18-3.

It only got worse for the Minutemen Saturday.

This time, Charlotte pounded out 29 hits, drew 10 walks and UMass committed six errors. For those counting at home, that adds up to 45 baserunners.

And a 24-6 beat down.

Rob Lyerly had one of the best games you'll ever see for the 49ers: 6-for-6, 6 RBI, 4 R, 3 HR, 2 2B, 3B and a walk.

In the ninth inning, with three home runs already, Lyerly drove a ball into deep left-center field. At first it appeared that he had his fourth home run of the afternoon, but it fell into the gap for a triple.

These teams meet up again Sunday at noon.

Travis Ford left the Massachusetts men's basketball program for a better conference and a higher-profile job at Oklahoma State.

He also left for the money.

BOSTON -- If you weren't at Fenway Park, you missed quite a game.

UMass's Mike Dicato lost his no-hitter in the ninth inning -- and the Minutemen almost blew their 4-0 ninth inning lead -- but Mitchell Eilenberg helped preserve the win, 4-3.

Also, check out Mike Connors' sidebar on the gem that Dicato hurled.

BOSTON -- UMass 3, BC 0 (top 9)

Hmm. How should I put this?

Let's just say, Boston College has a lot of zeros...

Seventh-inning stretch

BOSTON -- UMass 3, BC 0 (btm 7)

Ryan Franczek's struggles continue, as he hit into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh.

But UMass and Dicato are in cruise control, even with the small lead.

Mike Dicato is pitching very well.

I can't say exactly what he's doing right now, if you know what I mean...
